Providence is a city distinguished by its wonderful collection of historic architecture and the College Hill neighborhood, located in the heart of Providence's East Side, represents the finest in institutional buildings and private homes. Along the neighborhood's most famous street, Benefit Street, one can enjoy the handsome buildings that house the city's finest private clubs, The Hope Club, the University Club, the Handicraft Club and the Arts Club. One of the nation's oldest private libraries, The Athenaeum, is appropriately housed in a Greek Temple. The steeple of the First Baptist Church (as in first in the country, built in 1774) can be seen from from the modest house of Stephen Hopkins, a  signer of the Declaration of Independence. Just down the street from the Hopkins place is the John Brown House, described by John Quincy Adams, who saw it soon after it was built in 1788, as "the most magnificent and elegant private mansion I have seen on this continent." Just off Benefit Street is the headquaters of the Providence Preservation Society which has taken the lead in insuring that the grand historical legacy of Providence endures. Appropriately, College Hill is a local Historic District.
