Summit - Hope Neighborhood East Side Providence RI

Summit Neighborhood on the East Side Providence RI

Summit or Hope in a neighborhood located to the West of Hope Street in the Nortwest Corner of the East Side of Providence RI .  It is bounded by North Main Street, Rochambeau Ave, Hope Street, and the Providence Pawtucket line. Hope is sometimes referred to as Summit, named for the street that runs through the middle of the neighborhood. Though "Hope" is officially recognized, residents and the local neighborhood organization more often used "Summit".  Just beyond Summit is the adjoining area known as Oakhill in Pawtucket.

The Hope area began to develop with the implementation of the streetcar, in 1875 which connected Downtown Providence to these outlying "rural" areas. Large farming lots gave way to subdivision and the establishment of single-family homes.

Recently, the Summit neighborhood was declared a national historic district which gives residents opportunities for tax credits for doing historically appropriate exterior renovations. Summit has a strong sense of community and neighborhood pride.  There is a well established community association and participation is encouraged.

Summit or Hope is anchored by Miriam Hospital and the revitalized and thriving commercial district along Hope Street, which has come to be know as Hope Village, a stretch of fine restaurants and shops. This investment and redevelopment has helped make Summit a dynamic place to live while still offering some of the more affordable homes and condos on the East Side Providence.
